Will England pass their toughest test yet?

England

Early on against Senegal, England needed Pickford to stop them from going behind but once Henderson opened the scoring in the 38th-minute, Southgate's men never looked back. Kane made it 2-0 before the break with his first goal of the tournament and just before the hour mark, Saka scored a third to wrap up a comfortable England victory and setup a date with France in the Quarter-Finals.

Team News:

After flying home to the UK earlier, Raheem Sterling is back with the team now, but it remains to be seen whether he will get a chance in the starting lineup. Meanwhile, Ben White is out of the game due to personal reasons. Declan Rica also dealt with illness the past week, but he should be ready for the game.

Predicted Lineup: Pickford (GK), Walker, Maguire, Stones, Shaw, Henderson, Rice, Foden, Saka, Bellingham & Kane

France

France were the heavy favourites to beat Poland in the last 16 and despite a decent performance from Lewandowski and co in the opening forty-five, a goal from Giroud just before the break put France into complete control of the game. Mbappe put his name firmly at the top of the list for the Golden Boot award as the young French striker scored two goals in the second half to put France 3-0 up. Poland pulled a goal back through a last-ditch Lewandowski penalty that just took the shine off what was a near-perfect performance from the French.

Team News:

Other than the false alarm regarding Mbappe's potential injury that we heard about over the past few days, not much has happened in the French team and they seem to be in good shape ahead of the quarter finals.

Predicted Lineup: Lloris (GK), Varane, Hernández, Upamecano, Koundé, Rabiot, Tchouaméni, Giroud, Griezmann, Dembélé & Mbappé

Starting Lineups

Player to Watch: Kylian Mbappe

This feels like an obvious choice but the performance of Kylian Mbappe could swing this game in one team's direction. France have relied on their star player to fire them to glory at the World Cup with the 23-year-old PSG forward netting 5-goals at the World Cup so far, making him the odds-on favourite to claim the Golden Boot award.

Mbappe has also chipped in with 2-assists making him one of his nation's key playmakers as well as being a goal threat. the relationship between Mbappe, Giroud and Griezmann has been key to France's progression in Qatar with the trio combining on numerous occasions to create and score goals for one another. However, if you take Mbappe out of this France side then they suddenly become far less of a threat and England will be looking to mark Mbappe tightly throughout the Quarter-Final as they know that this will be key to their own success.

Mbappe for France: 63-caps, 33-goals

Mbappe Top Goalscorer at the World Cup: 3/5 (1.60)

Mbappe First Goalscorer against England: 5/1 (6.00)

The Guardian talk about how England will be looking to keep a shackle on Mbappe with coach Steve Holland working on a plan to keep the superstar as quiet as possible. England have been very strong at the back in Qatar, keeping clean sheets in all of their games since the 6-2 win over Iran, but can they stop Mbappe from scoring or creating goals for his teammates this weekend? We will just have to wait and see.

Will Mbappe lead his national team to glory once again?

Speaking to Sky Sports, Kyle Walker has stated that England will not roll out the red carpet for Mbappe, which suggests that the Three Lions do indeed have a plan for France's talisman,

“We respect that he is a good player in good form, but I am not going to roll out a red carpet for him and tell him to go and score… I'm representing my country at the quarter-final in a World Cup, it's do or die really. If we lose, we go home. He's not going to stand in my way of winning a World Cup for my country.”

Strong words there from the England and Man City defender but is there a danger that England are focusing too much on one player? Not according to Walker,

“I think the game's not England vs Mbappe, it's England vs France… When we've played in the four times against PSG for Man City in the Champions League, you're not just thinking about Mbappe… I think it is exactly the same on Saturday… He's a tool in their armoury that is very good, but there are other good players and we can't underestimate them. [They have] players that have won big titles, won World Cups… So OK, he [Mbappe] is a great player, we know that – that is why all of the questions are about him.”

It's clear that England will need to find a way to stop Mbappe if he plays anywhere near to the level he has already in Qatar but France have more threats than just Mbappe and England themselves have plenty to worry the French as Southgate's men were the top scoring side in the group stage and then put three goals passed Senegal in the last 16.

What happened the last time these two sides met?
